The Farmers Daughter

Situated in Howick at 4 Shafton Road, Howick is an absolute delight. Set in a two storey atypical Pietermaritzburg red brick building. Downstairs there is a lovely verandah that opens out onto the surrounding garden area. Upstairs the internal area opens out to a picturesque balcony overlooking the Howick valley. The entire atmosphere is one of a funky eclectic look and feel. From the décor to the chairs and tables, plates , and cutlery the restaurant offers a very unique and interesting environment. The artisanal menu has a wide and exciting range of offerings certainly more than sufficient to meet a wide range of tastes. The food is fresh, beautifully presented and certainly offers value for money. The service is friendly and warm from the moment of arrival and you never need to wait for all your needs and requirements. Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner or a decadent snack, The Farmers Daughter is well worth a visit. We will definitely pop in again ! Olive and Oil Umhlanga

We have eaten here a few times and also visited the Glenwood and Pietermaritzburg outlet. There are four outlets in total, with the forth being in Hillcrest. They really seem to have got the recipe right and you can be assured of a similar standard of food and service no matter which outlet you visit. Good value for money and quality is available with a wide range on the menu to suit all tastes. Popular with families we have yet to experience a bad meal. Whilst the restaurants have a Mediterranean flair and leaning it’s clear that the menu suits the South African palette. The group was started by Jacqui and Nickos Itopoulos, and later joined by Craig Storkey, being very much a family run and owned operation. The range on the menu offers from poultry, fish, to meat, pastas, pizzas and a full kiddies menu. They also offer daily specials and set menus with a starter, main and dessert which offer good value for money. Vegetarian offerings are also available. The team decided to visit the restaurant for dinner recently. Set in the Holiday Inn Express in Umhlanga just off Umhlanga Rocks Drive allows for plenty of parking for guests visiting the restaurant who are not staying in the hotel. The restaurant has a sister situated in Crowne Plaza Johannesburg, Rosebank. The Umhlanga restaurant is large and spacious with a warm ambience. It has a modern and clean design and caters for a more upmarket meal, family meal or a quick bite to eat. We found the staff to be warm friendly and attentive. They have a good wine selection for those with a discerning palette. Well known for its main feature on the menu of steak, the group was founded in 2003 as a steakhouse. Drakensberg Valley Bakery

The Valley Bakery in the hilly slopes of the Drakensburg has become more than just a bakery in the Berg, it has become a Berg Institution. Travelers should not dream about vacationing in the Berg without stopping at this prized gem tucked away beyond an airstrip and behind rows of tall shady trees. This past weekend we made two stops at the Valley Bakery and we were not disappointed. On the first occasion, it was a glorious sunny day and we decided to have a cold beverage and treat in the shade of the verandah. Delicious looking biscuits, donuts and breads are the first treats that you notice when entering the bakery. There is also display cabinets showing off cute kitchen wares, baby clothes and various arts and crafts. Multiple cakes line the counters and sit in the cool fridges for customers to choose from, definitely making your mouth water at every sight. Creamy milkshakes, lemon meringue pies, cooked shoestring chips and quiche were our choice of the day and we could not falter the Bakery on any of these. Champagne Castle Hotel

We recently stayed at the self catering units of the hotel. We have also previously stayed in the hotel on a number of occasions. Once again it did not disappoint. The unit we stayed in had lovely views of the mountain range with the small dam in front of the unit. It is also the only unit that is pet friendly. It sleeps a maximum of six, with two separate rooms and a further area upstairs with two single beds. The main room is en suite and there is also a bathroom downstairs. All the comforts of home are provided with good quality finishes and equipment in the kitchen. You can also eat in the hotel if you wish. A lovely spa is also available for pampering.
