My wife and I spent a weekend at the lodge. We stayed in a lovely garden suite with a beautiful view of the amphitheater from every window. All your needs are met in the room and there are various size suites depending upon your number of persons. The price includes breakfast and a plated dinner. The food was lovely and a step up from the normal buffet fare offered at most Drakensberg resorts. Lunches can be paid for separately and they have a wide offering to choose from. As we pulled up to the gate to the lodge, a long stretch of sandy dirt road lay in front of us. As we entered this private nature reserve, a herd of impala sprung across the road and we knew from that moment that we were in the bush. At reception we were greeted by our friendly host, Jane. She welcomed us and walked us to our chalet for two. As we had chosen the self-catering option, the kitchenette in the room was of particular importance to us and it did not disappoint. It was well-equipped. After we had settled in, we decided to embark on a self-guided nature walk, which was quite safe as the reserve does not have predators. We came across many different antelope species, exquisite birds and a troop of monkeys. It was awesome to see these creatures up close in their natural habitat. This reserve is also only about a twenty minute drive away from the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, which offers the excitement of seeing the Big 5. We spent four glorious nights at Uplands Homestead. Looked after by the hands on team at Uplands we wanted for nothing. Your own cook, butler, ranger, host makes you feel like royalty. Staying in the Uplands Homestead (which by the way was opened by their HRH’s the Earl and Countess of Essex) we were spoilt rotten in terms of food drinks and all aspects of the accommodation. Each room is beautifully appointed with views onto your private garden. The terrain of Kwandwe is different and varied to the normal bushveld one would experience in the rest of South Africa which makes the viewing and entire experience really different. No high trees and dense bush. Special sighting of the rare bat eared fox is really special. Having our own ranger and tracker meant amazing photographic experiences and sightings. You never feel like there are other people on the reserve. Thanks to the entire team for all your kind efforts they will not be forgotten!
An awesome show to attend whilst in the Drakensberg area is the bird of prey show at Falcon Ridge. A team of dedicated and adventurous bird handlers put on an excellent show which offers an up close experience with the birds of prey. An educational talk is provided with each bird species and thereafter a jaw dropping presentation is exhibited by the birds themselves. The eagles were flying so high that they looked like a speck on my sunglasses and they were lost amongst the clouds catching the warm thermals as they rose higher and higher. In a few seconds they became visible again, like a rocket ship piercing through the blue skies to land back on a tree in front of us. Falcons are small birds of prey but possibly the fastest. The falcon on display was flying and making manoeuvres at ridiculously high speeds. There was also a beautiful owl on display who at first was a bit skittish but as his presentation continued got cheekier and cheekier and had the crowd laughing and loving him. We recently stayed at the self catering units of the hotel. We have also previously stayed in the hotel on a number of occasions. Once again it did not disappoint. The unit we stayed in had lovely views of the mountain range with the small dam in front of the unit. It is also the only unit that is pet friendly. It sleeps a maximum of six, with two separate rooms and a further area upstairs with two single beds. The main room is en suite and there is also a bathroom downstairs. All the comforts of home are provided with good quality finishes and equipment in the kitchen. You can also eat in the hotel if you wish. A lovely spa is also available for pampering.
We arrived at Highstakes on a cold, grey and rainy Wednesday morning and were greeted by a friendly and very helpful Craig. Craig pointed us in the right direction and sent us on towards the 4×4 course. He said that he would accompany us to show us some sections of the course that were not open to the general public. We were driving the Subaru XV Auto, which proved to be a very capable vehicle for a soft-roader and we were very impressed by how well it handled the course. Brad was in the driving seat of the Scubi (as it’s affectionately known) and his confidence grew as we conquered obstacles we didn’t think were possible in this vehicle. Every obstacle has a bypass so if you chicken out or your vehicle can’t make it through or you are afraid of damaging your vehicle you can always drive around the difficult bits. We followed Craig past the no entry signs to reveal some steep axle twisting hill climbs. The little Subaru was certainly put to the test but after a few tries it made it up both slopes. An ordinary Saturday morning turned into an unexpected horticultural experience as we stumbled across a Rotary event in Kloof called “Open Gardens”. All of a sudden we were drawn into different peoples’ properties to view their spectacularly well-kept gardens. It was a glorious sunny day and therefore perfect outdoor weather for this type of event. As our journey began we were given a map and lead on a type of garden treasure hunt. The beautiful blooming flowers and their layout enthralled all our senses. Vibrant flowers in every colour could be seen along with pollinating bees and chirping birds. Ducks and swans paraded around in ponds in the heart of nature. It was such a relaxing event as we could walk around the properties ourselves and appreciate the beauty and tranquility that each garden provided. This event was was such fun for the whole family, especially the grandparents who enjoyed a cup of tea at the Tea Garden whilst admiring the aesthetically pleasing views.
As the sun rose behind the hills of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, locals and tourists alike were mesmerized by the escarpment. The feeling of being completely at peace and at home set in as we drove around looking out eagerly for the movement of animals. The Reserve offers not only a romantic getaway for two but also caters for family excursions and children go wild with excitement at seeing the animals. We watched graceful rhinos grazing right next to the road. We were completely amazed by them yet made sure we kept our distance as they got closer and the adrenalin starting pumping through our veins. With baboons and monkeys running up and down the hills playfully, they almost stopped and posed for our photos whilst also keeping watch in the skies for the eagle that was circling around us. The giraffes were almost camouflaged in the autumn trees and the sounds of snapping twigs alerted us to their presence.
